E.O. Hawkins receipt, 1832 May 30.

This is a receipt, dated May 30, 1832, for fifty brace of horseman's pistols issued to Hawkins by the Quartermaster General of the Kentucky militia, with a note that another ten brace were to be supplied when the next supply of "Cavalry arms" arrived. John Woods was the incumbent Quartermaster General.

Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year. These companies could be called to active duty by the governor in case of war, insurrection, or danger to public safety.
